Robot designs

Sketchbook assignment – Robots

I was tasked to create 3 robots with original themes and put them all together to make a final piece.

PC robot
I have designed this robot based on old PC designs, adding features such as a floppy disk drive and tape recorders. It has an LED screen that shows the robot’s facial expressions making communication with humans easier.

What works well?
My favourite parts of the robot are the bolts design, the cables connecting other components of the robot and the tape recorder. I also like the claw hand design.

Radiation-o-matic
I designed this robot as a radiation-clearing robot for nuclear power plants. I based the head off the style of an old Victorian light bulb.

What works well?
I think that the dials on the robot work well, as well as the glass head design and the rubber joints that connect the limbs. I think the new design for the claws work better than the previous robot.

Drone 268
This robot is designed for clearing rubble in disasters, it has a built in antenna for communications and uses a jet engine for fast movements in emergencies.

What works well
The radio antenna design works well for the functions of the drone, and the style of the mouth that uses sound waves to show the vocal expression and speech of the drone.

Final design – Alpha 1
My final robot design is from the 21st century, it is designed on a first attempt at putting human life into robots. Alpha 1 is designed to help scientists further their understanding of robotic humans and help them see the challenges of putting life into machines.
Alpha 1 has a radio antenna, which allows it to pick up multiple radio transmissions, and a voice receiver, which allows it to communicate with the other scientists. It has claw hands, which are pressure sensitive and allow it to pick up multiple things with ease. It has spring coils on its arms and legs which make the robots movement a lot more realistic and mobility easier.
